first, the latest on the newtown murders. this morning connecticut's chief medical examiner will perform autopsies on the gunman and his mother, who was killed at her home. the results will be released during a news conference later today. the names of the victims were made public last night. 12 girls and 8 boys killed, all either 6 or 7 years old. the six adults killed at the school were women. the medical examiner says every victim he saw was hit more than once, and all the wounds he saw were inflicted by the semi-automatic rifle found at the scene. president obama will be here in newtown late this afternoon to meet with the victims' families and speak at an evening memorial. cnn national correspondent susan candiotti is outside the home the gunman and his mother shared. susan, let me bring you in. tell me, what is the latest on the investigation? >> reporter: we know that the investigators including atf agents will be continuing to pound the streets today chasing down leads that they have looking into what is being told to

what do you think is the healing process going to be for newtown? >> it's going to be a long one, soledad. it's great that the people -- i think people realize that you and -- i'm in the media and i'm a newtowner. they realize this is a human issue. this isn't partisan, this isn't media. we all felt something here. something totally changed across the country and we happen to be at the epicenter of it. it's going to be tough for the town. the families, you know -- i can't even begin to understand what it's going to be like. the town is rallying. this community, i mean, i moved here when i was 2, in 1969. moved back, left when i went to college, moved back here to raise my children. and i can tell you the community is rallying. those of us who were fortunate enough not to lose people close, close, close to us, have been putting together -- just trying to feed people, trying to make sure there's some sort of infrastructure for when -- in particular, i'm involved with newtown united, a group trying to put together essentially an advocacy infrastructure

you start to know what kind of community newtown is and you start to understand how newtown survives. i feel like i've done a lot of talking the last four days, both publicly and to families and to community members. so i want to make sure that this is an hour where those who have been grieving all across the country can come and share their thoughts as well. we've offered a resolution tonight which expresses both our outrage at what happened that day, but also our great sympathy. it does help to know that people from all around the country, from every congressional district and from every country around the world are grieving with us. only bits and pieces of that seeps through that wall of misery that surrounds newtown now, but when it does pierce that veil, it helps. we're going to have a lot of time over the next few days and weeks to talk about what we do next and i'm sure we'll have some of that discussion tonight. i'll join that conversation when it's right and i don't begrudge anybody that has it today. it's important to talk about how we move forward and how we make sure this

elementary school here in newtown. upon realizing the intensity and difficulty of the situation, newtown called for surrounding police departments and state police to respond to assist. upon arrival of law enforcement officers at the school, they immediately entered the school as we knew this was an active potential active shooter situation. their focus was to search for students, faculty and staff and remove them to a safe area outside of the school. they did search every nook an cranny, every room and every portion of that school and accomplished that task. they took refuge to a staging area to reunite them with family members. as has been reported there were fatalities. there were 18 children pronounced dead at the school. there were two that were trance portded and pronounced dead at area hospitals and six adults pronounced dead at the school at the scene. as the governor reported, the shooter is deceased, deceased in the school. there's a great deal of work going on relative to that. that's the reason we have not
